How it works: A closed-loop liquid cooling data center uses a sealed, self-contained circuit of liquid (water or coolant) to directly absorb heat from high-density server chips, preventing evaporation and reducing water usage. The system pumps cool liquid to servers, where it warms up, then moves to a heat exchanger to be cooled and recircula

ted.


Possible benefits: Water Conservation: Unlike open evaporative systems, closed-loop systems use a fixed, recirculating volume of water, reducing, or in some cases eliminating, onsite water usage. High-Density Cooling: These systems are well-suited for AI workloads (GPUs/CPUs) by delivering cooling directly to the heat source (direct-to-chip) or immediately behind the rack. Increased Efficiency: Closed-loop systems enable higher heat transfer efficiency and often allow for higher-temperature water, reducing the energy needed for cooling. Minimal Makeup Water: While they are "closed," these systems may require occasional topping off, but they avoid the massive continuous water consumption typical of cooling towers.
