Data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons of water daily for cooling, heavily straining local aquifers and potentially depleting nearby residential wells. Large-scale water withdrawal can lower water tables, reduce your well's pressure, and increase sediment, requiring deeper drilling or causing pump failures. This demand peaks during warmer months and in water-stressed regions.


Intensive pumping by data centers can cause regional aquifer levels to fall, potentially leaving residential wells dry. As aquifers drop, your home pump works harder, which can lead to reduced water pressure, slow filling, and shortened pump life. Lowering the water table can draw sediment into your well, affecting water quality and clogging pipes. Data centers often need to use high-quality drinking water for cooling, competing directly with homeowners and farmers, especially during drought conditions.


Data centers require massive amounts of water to cool computers that run 24/7, particularly with the rise of AI. Many systems evaporate water to remove heat, meaning this water is not immediately returned to the local source. A single large data center can consume as much water as a town of 10,000–50,000 residents. The electricity required to run data centers also consumes water through thermoelectric power generation, often making the indirect water footprint even large.


Protecting Your Well Monitor Levels: Keep records of your well's water levels, pump performance, and any changes in water pressure. Community members often push for local governments to conduct site-specific water risk assessments and require data centers to implement water-use monitoring. If your well is in an area with new data center construction, it is advisable to monitor for changes in water supply and quality, especially during summer months.
